A Periphery in Focus
Currently featured is the work of Christopher Herrera, a photographer and graphic designer based in the United States.
A common theme in Herrera’s work to date is isolation and the use of loneliness as a catalyst for art-making (Apparent Retrograde Motion, 2018). The images here were created in 2019 and 2020 as part of an ongoing project that considers the notion of internal world building– the perception of reality through individual bias, experience, and affirmation. Following a series of anxiety attacks, moments of personal confusion, and derealisation towards the end of 2018, his perception of the world was quickly altered. As this new perspective slowly became clearer he began to make photographic observations again. The results offer glimpses of varying subjects and landscapes that are vibrant yet quiet, waiting to be affected.
While Herrera's previous work has focused on trying to find clear answers to a shared human experience, the aim of this project is to allow more free flowing thoughts and open-ended questions:
Does it ever feel like this world was built just for you?
Are these landscapes really here?
What part of this world have I truly experienced? What difference does it make?
Approaching photography and human experience as an ‘open field’, these photographs depict objects in focus as well as a periphery in focus.
